1 Corinthians 4:18-19 (KJV)
Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you.
But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power.

Pastor Jide: stop listening to those pastors, they don’t understand the gospel. They only minister condemnation and death.

Segun: But Pastor, these pastors are the ones who brought the gospel to us with great power from God and caused our entire communities to turn from idols to Christ Jesus. How come you keep saying these same people do not understand the gospel?

Segun observed that pastor Jide had no real power in his ministry to make disciples, but he claimed everyone else was wrong and he was right.

When Apostle Paul left the Corinthians and moved on to the next mission field, some other apostles like Apollos graciously went to Corinth to help water what Paul had already planted. But there were also other teachers who arose, and these teachers felt they had an understanding of the gospel contrary to what was preached by Paul, Apollos and the other apostles of the Lord.

One thing characterized these teachers, they were full of words but no power. And they were puffed up but had no real spiritual authority.

Today, such teachers have arisen in the church. They criticize everyone who does not subscribe to their warped version of the gospel. They are arrogant and have little regard for scriptures (except those that appear to support their doctrines). These teachers are the worst thing that can happen to any true believers who is not yet spiritually mature.

Go into today asking the Lord to deliver the church in your nation from false teachers. Ask the Lord to deliver you from the influence of all such teachers.

Genesis 28:16 (KJV)
And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.

Because Caleb grew up in a very racist community, his confidence in life came from the fact that he was from a particular race, and he saw all other races as inferior. Because of this mindset, he could not advance in the kingdom of God the way he desired. He wondered why the miracle-working power of God was not present in his ministry even though he had had encounters with the Lord. The Lord graciously revealed to him that as long as he still defined himself from the standpoint of his fleshly identity, he wouldn’t be able to fulfill his destiny that is tied to his divine identity.

Yesterday, we saw that except a believer overcomes his fleshly identity and ways, his encounters and blessings with God may not make much difference in his daily life.

Every other encounter Jacob had with God would have been for his growth if he had utilized the first appropriately. Because of this lack of understanding, he suffered 21 years of hard labor and pain. Every unnecessary labor in your life will end today if you will let your identity in Christ dominate your life from today.

Unlike Jacob, Saul asked this question when he had his encounter with the Lord, he asked: ‘what wilt thou have me to do?’ see Acts 9:6 (KJV). It was his obedience to the Lord’s response that launched him into his glorious destiny.

Go into today remembering that the world desperately awaits the manifestation of the sons of God like you (Romans 8:19). Ask the Lord to help you walk in your divine identity and do exploits.

Genesis 28:16 (KJV)
And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.

After Jacob had stolen the blessing from Esau his brother, he had to run for his life. Even though he had the blessing and God’s Covenant Presence, he never walked in this reality but lived a troubled life until he had the encounter that brought him into his divine Identify. This happened when for the first time, he acknowledged his sinful ways reflected in the name and identify he was known by. One of the meanings ascribed to the name Jacob is supplanter, and Jacob lived up that unrighteous reputation. But when he received a new name and identity from the Lord, his future and destiny was no more laden with uncertainty but with the blessing that produced God’s firstborn nation.

Like Jacob, many have encountered God, but because they have not conquered their fleshly identity, they are still very limited and oppressed. God revealed himself to Jacob in Bethel (Gen 28:12), but he continued life as a troubled man until he confessed his old identity and received his new identify from God (see Genesis 32:27-28).

Many Born again, Holy Ghost filled, tongue talking believers with many heavenly encounters have found that their lives do not reveal the glory and fruitfulness of a blessed life. What might be wrong?

Go into today knowing that, except you overcome the works and identity of the flesh, and live a life consistent with your new identity in Christ, your encounters may not translate to much fruitfulness in your daily life.

Prayer: Lord,  help me to walk in my new identity and live a blessed fruitful life,  in Jesus name. Amen.

1 Corinthians 4:16-17 (KJV)
Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.
For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church.

After Jide became a believer in the Lord Jesus, he found it very difficult to submit to anybody. Because he was very intelligent, he started reading the bible from cover to cover and memorized a great part of it. Many times, he did not see the need to go to church because he felt he already knew what the pastor was going to teach. He was not accountable to anyone, not even the person through whom the gospel came to him.
This was the reason Jide was not growing the way he should. He was still a very weak and vulnerable believer. His heart was still full of many works of the flesh like pride, greed, lust, and selfishness.

One of the attributes of believers who have truly yielded themselves to the Lordship of Jesus is submission to one another in the fear of the Lord (see Ephesians 5:21). God has placed people ahead of us in the faith, and we are expected to follow their example in righteousness, faith, and good deeds. There are many things we learn by simply being followers of those who have gone ahead of us in the faith. These things would have taken us much longer to discover on our own.

Go into today remembering that a great part of the [power producing] virtues and disciplines of our faith is learned by imitating those who have gone ahead of us in the faith (see Hebrews 6:12). Ask the Lord to guide you to the right mentors and teachers.

HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER

1 Corinthians 4:15 (NET)
For though you may have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, because I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Kaura was facing unending battles and challenges. He knew something was fundamentally wrong spiritually, but he could not place his finger on it. As he continued to seek the Lord to find out where the problem was, the Lord sent a prophet to tell him that he needs to start honoring his father as a thing of necessity. He immediately knew that the Lord wanted him to connect with his father in the Lord who he never really honored. When his father in the Lord started praying for him, things became well with him?

When the Lord said we should not call anyone father, but God (Matt 23:9), there was a context to this statement. In that culture, Father was not just the male parent of a household, but someone considered to be the source and sustainer of the household. So what the Lord is saying is that we should not consider any man to be our source, sustainer or provider. Only God is our source and sustainer, even though He uses men to help us as He pleases.

The Lord was not banning the use of the word ‘father’ because He is the one who commanded us to honor our fathers and mothers(see Eph 6:1).

Your salvation was not a coincidence, and the person through whom it came to you was not a coincidence either. Just like those through whom God sent us into this world are our fathers (and God approves of this characterization), those through whom we got into the kingdom of God are our fathers or mothers also. I do not mean those who got us to pray the ‘sinner’s prayer’ the very first time we did, I mean those through whom we came to know the Lord in reality.

Go into today remembering that it is wrong to see any man as your sustainer and pillar in life. Also, remember that we are to honor our fathers and mothers, so that it may be well with us (see Eph 6:1).

Exodus 3:7-8b (KJV)
And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; and I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

A Sunday School story is told of a man of God who lived in an ancient city. The city was flooded and all lives were destroyed, but he managed to run to the top of the tallest mountain in town where he called on God for help saying “God, I am your servant, come and save me from this flood.” Just before the flood water got to his ankle, a rescue team came in a flying boat “jump in” they exclaimed but he responded, “no, God will come and save me”. When the water got to his knees, another team appeared and yet another when the water was at his waist, but his response was the same. The water finally covered him and he drowned. When he got to heaven, he told God how disappointed he was, but God’s response was “I sent help to you three different times. Those rescuers came in response to your prayer but you turned them down.”

God answers us so many times by sending men, but the inability to discern such answers from God is a reason why many continue to suffer. God heard the cry of the people of Israel and came to rescue them, however, He came not as God Almighty, but through Moses.

The people of Israel were crying to God for a messiah, but they rejected him when he came as Christ Jesus because they could not discern their day of visitation (Luke 19:44).

Discerning answers when they come from God is as important as asking for help. If we cannot receive answers, our prayers will be long and unending.

Go into today trusting the Holy Spirit to help you discern the answers to your prayers no matter how the answers come.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

James was an only son of a widowed mother, but he was living his life without a care. He had an arrogant confidence because his uncle had told him that he would sponsor his university education to masters level. Unfortunately, all of a sudden, his uncle died and then it dawned on him that his future was in jeopardy. He experienced a lot of pain and hardship afterward, but by grace he met and accepted Jesus as his Lord. In later years, looking back after finishing his Ph.D. with scholarship in one of the most prestigious universities in the world, he was most grateful that God's plan prevailed in his life instead.

To the one who is lost or who feels like the worst offender, God still has a plan waiting to prosper you. However, it only becomes active when you by faith, receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior (Luke 23:40-43).

To you who knows and fears God but are wondering how you'll make it, as your life at this point in time seems to be further away from your dreams, be encouraged! God's plan may not follow the route your mind expects, but it would come to fruition (Gen 50:20). Just as there's a way that seems right at first, but the end is destruction, God's plan may not seem clear to you now, but it will surely lead to life and peace (Pro 12:28).

Go into today knowing that God's plan is still intact and unchanged concerning your life, and as you keep trusting Him, your life will only get brighter till you get to your place of glory (Pro 4:18).

John 8:32 (KJV)
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

We understood that the Bible contains truths, it becomes the truth to us when it is revealed by the Holy Ghost and hence makes us free.

James 4:3 (KJV) “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” Jesus puts it this way in John 16:24 “Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” You may want to ask the question, what will you call the prayers I have prayed?

If you ask amiss according to James 4:3, it is interpreted by Jesus in John 16:24 as not asking at all. This is because he (Jesus) promised that we will receive when we ask in his name and his promises are yea and amen (1 Chronicle 17:1). John 16:23 (KJV) reads “And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.”

How then should I ask in other to receive? Let the Holy Spirit help you. Challenges, problems or the unfavorable situations around you may chase you to the place of prayer but they certainly should not determine and dominate what you ask for and how you ask.

Romans 8:25 (KJV) “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered.” When the Spirit helps us in prayer, the truth will be revealed and our freedom will come in response to the revealed truth. See Jeremiah 33:3.

Go into today trusting the Holy Spirit to help you in all things, prayer inclusive. He will guide you into all truth if you let Him.

1 Corinthians 4:9 (NET)
For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to die, because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to people.

When Collins started becoming interested in serving the Lord, naturally, he wanted to be at the peak of this service. After being in church for a while, he observed that many considered the office of the apostle to be the highest in the body of Christ. Because of this, he wanted also to be an apostle. Because he was really committed and dedicated to the work in his local church, he was soon ordained as a minister. But still, he wanted to be called an apostle.

One morning, he was studying the word of God when he came across today’s Bible verse. He read it again and again, and this really scared him. From that moment, he started changing his mind concerning his dream to someday become an apostle.

Whether a person is an apostle, or a prophet, or an evangelist, or a pastor and teacher, is not really his decision to make. These things are determined by God from before the person is born (see Gal 1:15, Jer 1:5). But whether a person ends up walking in God’s call for his life is dependent on how he responds to God during the days of his sojourning here on earth. Many indeed are called, but few are chosen. The difference between the chosen and the rest is faithfulness (Rev 17:14). God doesn’t entrust much to the unfaithful (see Luke 16:10).

I do not believe that everyone who has the call to be an apostle must necessarily die for the faith (Apostle John didn’t die the death of a martyr), but I believe that everyone who must effectively walk in his call must have the mindset of an apostle. One that is willing to give up his life (if need be) for the sake of the gospel (see Luke 14:26, Rev 12:11).

Prayer: Ask the Lord to help you fulfill His call for your Life. This is the most important thing in life.

A FRIENDLY CHASTISEMENT

Proverbs 27:5-6 (KJV)
Open rebuke is better than secret love. [6] Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

It probably must have been hard and embarrassing for Peter who was handed over leadership of the early church by Christ, to see himself openly rebuked by Paul, who formerly persecuted Christians. However, because in humility he accepted and saw in the rebuke God's truth, this same Peter would later affectionately refer to Paul as a beloved brother. Paul was truly a friend (Gal 2:11-14, 2 Pet 3:15).

The word of God in Hebrews 12:7-12 talks about accepting correction from God and from earthly parents. It is quite understandable for one to accept chastisement when the chastiser is of higher authority, but what happens when it's from a perceived peer or a friend?

In truth, God is far higher than us in Authority and Might, but in an incredible act of love, He brought Himself down to our level and called us His brethren and friends (Heb 2:9-11, Jn 15:15).

It may hurt us more when a friend points out to us our wrongs, but it pays in the end because we very often confide more about ourselves to them than we would to our rulers, parents, etc., so our friends know how to be of help to us more personally (Pro 18:24).

We must reject pride and mustn't be believers who only respond to correction if it comes from the top, but not from our own peers, otherwise, the enemy will capitalize on our ego to bring us down (Matt 23:12).

From today, determine to be humble to not only accept rebuke from your believing peers but also be bold enough to confess your faults to them as well, for prayers from such meetings lead to deliverance (Jam 5:16, Job 42:8-10).

1 Corinthians 4:8 (NET)
Already you are satisfied! Already you are rich! You have become kings without us! I wish you had become kings so that we could reign with you!

Gbenga and his wife were fond of criticizing and judging servants of God. They were experts at searching out faults of men of God and criticizing them (many of their criticisms were based on false assumptions and partial truths). They felt they had the authority to do this because they believed they were spiritually gallant and were now great people in the kingdom of God who had the authority and the ability to judge. Their main reason for this feeling was because materially speaking, things were going well for them, and they felt this was a function of their spiritual might. But they were wrong. They were still spiritual babes who needed to be taught the rudiments of the faith. But with this mindset, they could not be taught and could not be fruitful.

Like the church in Laodicea (Rev 3:17), the young church in Corinth began to have a false sense of security because of their worldly riches. Physically speaking, they were doing well and had money. They thought because of how things were going well for them physically, it was an indication of their advancement and greatness in the kingdom of God. Many of them believed that they had become kings and rulers in the kingdom, and they felt they now had the authority to judge the servants of God and compare one to another(see 1 Cor 4:3-6). But they were wrong, they were still spiritual babes (see 1 Cor 3:1) and were heading for the rocks without the apostolic intervention of Paul.

If criticizing ministers of God has become your ‘spiritual gift’, it is a sign of spiritual immaturity and retrogression.

Go into today remembering that the real measure of spiritual might is faithfulness and humility.

Psalm 118:6 (KJV)
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

Further Reading: Psa 124, Rom 8:31-33

A toddler who only began to walk recently was holding the hand of her mother in a mall. Each time she mistakenly stumbled, her mom held and propped her up to her feet so that she wouldn't fall. But growing in excitement, against her mom's wishes, the toddler wanted to walk on her own. Through persistence, she removed her tiny fingers from her mother's hand but didn't get really far, as only a few yards away, she tripped, fell and began to cry.

The world today is full of evil and increased atrocities that make one want to hide in fear. But according to God's word, it is clear that God is on the side of those who worship Him. He is on our side regardless of the magnitude of our opposition (2 Kings 6:16). Even when we stumble in ignorance, just like a mother, God is there to uphold us (Psa 145:14). We must believe it, know it and confess it.

There are many instances in the Bible when God wasn't on the side of the Israelites and as a result, they lost several battles. Same also can be said for the believer. God loves us and desires to always be on our side, but if we deliberately lose our hands from His and decide to go solo like that toddler, we would stumble and fall.

The word of God in Amos 3:3 becomes very apt because it means that unless we remain in agreement with God (His Will), we cannot be guaranteed that He is on our side.

Go into today in agreement and obedience to God's word and be assured of a life in Christ without the fear of any present or future dangers because God will always be by your side (Rom 8:38-39).

Job 14:1 (KJV)
Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

I watched a video recently of how some brave medical doctors calmly tried to resuscitate a newborn child whose heart wasn't moving. The child was so new, yet went through a lot and was at some point smacked severally in the rear till he cried and started to breathe normally. It was very moving as well as hard to watch but thankfully the doctors were early and quick to spot the issue and save the child.

From our scripture text, man's life here on earth is short but filled with hardship. From a different angle, it could also be said that even a baby of only a few minutes already has trouble waiting for him. Whichever way we choose to view it, it is clear that trouble is inevitable (Jn 16:33).

Many believers wait until certain situations get very bad before they begin to pray. If the devil doesn't wait for anyone to settle down in life (including children) before he attacks, why then do we wait before we pray?

In Psalm 50:15 God says "Call on me in the day of trouble...”. If we've established that man’s days on earth are inevitably filled with trouble, do we wait for that day or do we instead get into prayers immediately? This is another reason why believing parents must teach their children to pray from their early age.

An early prayer life, especially as one rises up for the day, helps prepare and equip one with the much-needed grace to face certain tough situations and overcome them.

Start your day always, praying in the Spirit as well as in your understanding, using the Word. As you do so, God will go ahead of you, and just like when Jesus prayed for Peter, will keep you from falling (Lk 22:31-32).

John 8:32 (KJV)
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

After Chinonso failed the same examination two consecutive times, he got tired of life. Even though he was a Christian who had been baptized in the Holy Ghost, he contemplated giving up [on God]. The next opportunity to rewrite the exam would be his last chance. It was at this time of depression that he found the scripture verse(Ps 84:7) that says “they go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God”. He responded to this light by choosing a specific time and place where he would stay in God’s presence(appear before God) each day through prayer and the word. Even though he couldn’t pray sometimes, he remained there in his place of prayer, waiting on God.

Chinonso passed the examination with flying colors the next time he took it. He could only attribute his resounding success this time to the strength he had received by daily waiting on the Lord.

The word of God reveals the truth that makes people free (John 8:31-32). Many have the Bible and have memorized some of it but are not free. This is because the word has not been revealed to them as the truth. The day you find the truth, it will make you free.

The way to know that what you have is the truth is through the freedom that accompanies it. Those who walk in the truth of God’s word cannot walk anymore in bondage (to sin or any demonic limitation). You can have the letter of scripture as memory verses and quote them fluently, but if you are not free because of them, you have not really met with the truth.

Ask the Lord to open your eyes to His light (the truth) for you for this season and help you appropriate the full benefits of your freedom and riches in Christ. This is the secret of a victorious Christian life. Know that when the truth comes, it changes your mind and influences your conduct.

THE FOOLISHNESS OF PRIDE

1 Corinthians 4:7 (NKJV)
For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

Solomon was a very proud young man because he was intelligent, rich and good looking. He didn't know how proud he was until some things happened and he needed help from certain people he had despised in the past. Because of the way he treated them in the past, he was ashamed to receive help from them. At that point, he understood the foolishness of pride.

A woman may become very proud because she is beautiful and intelligent, but the truth is that she was born that way. There was really nothing of her doing that made her born so beautiful and intelligent. Some people were born with borderline IQ, others were born with brain damage or certain weaknesses, and it wasn't their fault they were born that way. Just like those born with privileges had nothing to do with the fact that they were born with privileges, those who were born without these privileges had nothing to do with the fact that they were born that way.

Those who have been hard working and successful should not be proud because their intelligence and ingenuity was given to them by God. Some people more hardworking are not as successful because they are not as intelligent or talented.

Everything you can ever have in this life is because it has been given to you by God. Even your life is a gift from God. One of the most foolish and repulsive things before God is pride. God resists the proud. Pride is not in the nature of God, it is evidenced in how God became flesh to atone for the sins of man. It is evidenced in the willingness of His Spirit to help us by dwelling within us believers.

Go into today searching your heart to see if you truly have the mind of Christ (see Phil 2:5, James 4:6, 1 Pet 5:5-6). Ask the Lord to forgive every pride in your heart and make you truly humble like Him.

John 6:35 (NKJV)
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

Further Reading: John 7:37 - 39 NKJV

One famous kind of bread you'll find in bakeries all over the world is the baguette. When stale, it can become very hard, and if eaten in this condition without any liquid, this French bread of high quality can be deadly to its eater by way of choking. Therefore, it is advised that a fluid which aids digestion accompany its consumption.

Similarly, many believers are also choked and can't seem to relate what they read in God's word with their physical reality (Mk 4:18-19). The Word, though given to us as our spiritual bread, still has to be properly eaten and well digested in our inner man before its life-giving nutrients are beneficial to us.

Using the Israelites or the prophet Elijah as examples, when God feeds people, He not only gives them food but gives them a diet that is so balanced and complete, to satisfy both their hunger and thirst (Exo 16:13-15; 17:6,1Kgs 19:5-8).

One may survive for a time with only solids but would fare less without water. So it is with the one who gets by, using head knowledge or mental assent in a legalistic approach to the Word of God without the Spirit's interpretation (2Cor 3:6).

As you study God's Word from today, ask the Holy Spirit to open your understanding. As you do so, you'll be filled and well-nourished to grow and fulfill God’s will for your life (Col 1:9, 2Pet 1:2, 2Pet 3:18).

STAY WITHIN WHAT IS WRITTEN

1 Corinthians 4:6 (NET)
I have applied these things to myself and Apollos because of you, brothers and sisters, so that through us you may learn “not to go beyond what is written,” so that none of you will be puffed up in favor of the one against the other.

Some time ago, I was studying about how some of the biggest cults and sects in the world started and I learned that many of them were started by people who were once in the church, but who at some point started interpreting scripture beyond what was written, and ignoring portions of scripture that they did not like. As a result, many such sect leaders were exposed to evil spirits that facilitated the movements they spearheaded.

One of the biggest mistakes a minister of God can make is to go beyond what is written in scripture. Any encounter, revelation or insight that cannot be backed by scripture, or is contradicted by scripture, is dangerous for the believer, even though it may make a lot of logical and common sense.

In 2 Cor 12:2-4, Apostle Paul talked about encounters in Paradise and the third heaven, but he said the things heard there were unlawful to be uttered. What does this (unlawful to be uttered) mean?

We know that the law of life is encoded in the scripture. Any truth, encounter or teaching that cannot be properly supported with existing scripture will be unlawful for a servant of God to teach. When things cannot be expressed within the ambit of scripture, they are not lawful to be uttered within the framework of ministry.

Go into today remembering that God has graciously given us the Holy Spirit and the Holy Scriptures to keep us in His will and guide us through this dark, murky world where it is so easy for people to lose their way (Psalm 119:105).

WAIT UNTIL THE LORD COMES

1 Corinthians 4:5 (NET)
So then, do not judge anything before the time. Wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the motives of hearts. Then each will receive recognition from God.

Chinonye received the Lord Jesus when she was a teenager and had grown to know the Lord. Because of this, she responded differently to situations she came across in life. Her colleagues in the office wondered why she was so calm and collected and so easily willing to forgive wicked offenders and overlook the most grievous trespasses against her. She tried to explain to them that even though people may escape human judgment on this earth, no one was going to escape God's judgment on the Day of Judgment. Because of this understanding, she didn't try to revenge because she knew God was going to judge. Eternal judgment didn't look like a time too long to wait for her because she knew she had eternal life and now had the proper perspective of time.

We can see from scripture that there are times that the spirit of judgment could come upon believers, as willed by the Lord, and they would proclaim judgment against the Lord's enemies (see Acts 13:11). But it has to be a result of the Lord’s leading, not a result of the fleshly desire to get vengeance.

Sometimes, believers have used their spiritual power to destroy people that would have later being a blessing to them and to the world because they wanted their vengeance instantly. There probably would be no 'Apostle Paul' if Stephen had used his authority to pray down judgment on those responsible for his execution (see Acts 7:58-60).

Go into today meditating on this:
Romans 12:19(NIV): Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.

Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Joel’s father now had an answer as to why his son returned to his old life. He, however, had another question: what should Joel have done?

1 Timothy 1:18-19 (NKJV) This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck.

Jude 1:3 “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”

The walk of faith is likened to war and contention. If you receive salvation by believing and do not contend to hold onto your faith (as described in 1 Tim 1:18-19 above), you may lose it just like Joel did.

Go into today remembering to fight the good fight of faith (see 1 Timothy 6:12). In Ephesians 6:13-18, we see how we do this.

1 Corinthians 4:3-4 (NET)
So for me, it is a minor matter that I am judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not acquitted because of this. The one who judges me is the Lord.

Even though Pastor Jude was innocent of all the accusations leveled against him by his enemies, he did not burden himself with the task of defending himself before his accusers. He simply explained the truth of the matter to the people that cared to listen, and he moved on.

He did this because he understood that expending too much energy and resources to get the approval of people who are willing to believe lies concerning him was futile, and this was not the kingdom way. A man who constantly seeks the approval of men will do this at the expense of the approval of the only one whose approval really counts-The Lord (see Gal 1:10).

This was the reason why Apostle Paul told the Corinthians in today’s Bible verse that it was a minor matter for him if he was judged by them or any human court. He made it clear to them that the one whose opinion mattered most was that of the Lord who is his judge.

He also made it clear that even though he may not be aware of any human accusation against him, it didn’t mean he was acquitted of all faults before the Lord who is his judge. Because it is possible to be celebrated by men and be despised by heaven.

Go into today remembering that your secret conduct as a believer is more important because we are all going to stand before the judgment seat of Christ and be judged for our works in the body (2 Cor 5:10, Col 3:23-25, 1Cor 3:14-15). This is the judgment that really matters.

Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

After a powerful evangelical crusade, thousands prayed the sinner’s prayer. Joel left the crusade ground excited because he had just accepted Jesus Christ. “My life has changed, God has changed me” he exclaimed as he ran home.

But two months after this wonderful experience, Joel had returned to his old life of sin.

Joel’s father who was overjoyed by his son’s change of life was now left confused and with many questions.

James 2:19 and Hebrews 11:6 (KJV) says “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble”. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him”.

It is by believing (faith) that you come to God, and it is by faith that you remain with God. But faith is not believing God alone, even devils believe and tremble. Faith is believing and seeking Him diligently: this is the true living faith. It is in your seeking God diligently that you will find peace and power with Him as a reward.

Go into today, making up your mind to add a diligent search for God (His word and truth) to your belief in Him, and watch how He will flood your life with His peace and amazing results. In 2 Peter, the first thing needed to be added to your faith is diligence. 2 Peter 1:5 (NASV): 'Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge'.

Proverbs 13:4 (KJV)
The soul of the sluggard desireth and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

Dayo and Greg did the same things, but the results showed that Greg was diligent. Like Dayo, many have lived a general life, their decisions and actions are a result of their surroundings and the influence of men. They run when they see others running and stop when everyone stops, they are therefore pegged to a life of the average.

Diligence entails that you fulfil your own part of the contract; the contract which God reveals as His will for you (popularly accepted as destiny). Give your attention and care to searching; through prayer, study, learning, and acquisition of new skills in the direction of God’s calling for you.

God is a rewarder; He rewards diligence and not just hard work. Hard work in the wrong direction is as futile as planting maize and hoping to harvest orange; it will never happen. The only thing that reward answers to is diligence.

Hebrews 11:6 (KJV) “But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that DILIGENTLY seek him.”

Go into today, making up your mind to fulfill your part of the contract by being diligent. Remember that God has given His will and His part is unchangeable!

SERVANTS OF CHRIST

1 Corinthians 4:2 (NET)
Now what is sought in stewards is that one be found faithful.

When it became clear to Eze that he too was a servant (minister) of Christ, he became more faithful to the Lord; he was now more committed to soul winning and discipleship, was now faithful in the way he handled his money, was now committed to the ministry of the word and prayer, and was now accountable to his brethren.

Many believers are not as faithful as they can be because they do not know that they too are servants of Christ. They think it is only their pastors that are servants of Christ. But the Bible makes it clear that believers are ministers --servants of God (see Eph 4:12, 2 Cor 5:18).

While children in a household are still babies, they are unable to serve in any capacity. But as they grow up, they are able to serve and handle responsibility in the family. As they further grow, a point will come that their father will feel comfortable to let them handle the family business. God wants you to handle great power in the kingdom, but it is required that you be found faithful.

One of the more popular Bible verses today is from Isaiah 54:17, it says: “No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment
You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
And their righteousness is from Me,’ Says the Lord”. This promise is actually meant for the servants of the Lord and every believer should be one. But how many really serve the Lord?

Go into today remembering that as a son in the household of God, you are expected to serve the Lord in faithfulness.
As you meditate on ways you can become more active in serving the Lord, ask Him to empower you to this end.

1 Corinthians 4:1 (NKJV)
Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.

Yinka's Grandma lived with them in the city. She was an unbeliever and could not understand what her children and grandchildren were always going to do in church every Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday. She had observed for years that they were always excited to go to church.

On a given Wednesday evening, she curiously asked: “what is it that you go to do in the church and stay so long and would still be so excited to go next time?”

Yinka responded: ma, we go to hear the word of God.

Grandma: Which word that has not finished for all these years? Don't you get tired of it? Is it not the same old Bible that they read it from?

For the first time, it occurred to Yinka that her Pastors didn't merely preach from the Bible, but were stewards of the mysteries of God. This was why they never ran out of fresh word from God that blessed the people. She invited her grandma to come to church with them. This time, she agreed to go with them just to see what made them so excited. That was the day Yinka's grandma accepted the Lord Jesus.

Every servant of Christ is a Steward of the mysteries of God. This is an awesome privilege. But just like most things in the kingdom of God, he must walk in this reality by faith, and this faith is activated by knowledge. He must know that as a servant of Christ, he is a steward of the mysteries of God.

Go into today remembering that through the church, the manifold wisdom of God is made known to the rulers and authorities in the spirit realm (Eph 3:10). This is because we have access to the mysteries of God.

Proverbs 13:4 (KJV)
The soul of the sluggard desireth and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

Dayo and Greg were students in the same class; they studied and played together as best friends. But at the end of the term, Greg always came first and Dayo came almost last in the class. It was after four years that Dayo met a principal who by the spirit of God counseled him and taught him about personal diligence. His principal told him that until results began to show for his work, he could not say he was truly diligent, because diligence always yields results when attained.

Greg and Dayo were both hardworking but Dayo was not diligent enough to see good results in his studies.

The attitude of Dayo was reading as much as Greg, and never more than Greg. He slept when Greg slept, etc. But when Dayo began doing more, his result came to a tally with Greg’s.

Merriam Webster dictionary defines diligence as “the attention and care legally expected or required of a person (as a party to a contract)”. God has a will for you; your part in seeing His will come to pass is in your diligence. God has given His will and His part is unchangeable.

Proverbs 22:29 (KJV): Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.

Go into today making up your mind to truly seek diligence. Ask the Lord to help you to be truly diligent from this moment.

Luke 18:4-5 (KJV)
4. And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, though I fear not God, nor regard man; 5. yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

The widow in today’s passage had no help except the wicked judge who neither feared man nor God. Trying to ask a man such as this for help is almost a waste of time, but she asked anyway and kept asking until her help came.

This is the word of the Lord for someone reading today: “ask one more time, do not give up”.

“Keep on asking and you will be given what you ask for. Keep on looking and you will find. Keep on knocking and the door will be opened” Matthew 7:7 (NLT). If a wicked judge will give justice to a poor widow; God who is gracious and Just will certainly give what you ask for if you keep on asking. “If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him” Matthew 7:11 (NLT).

Continue to ask, do not give up on yourself; God has not given up on you.

Go into today encouraged, strengthened and full of hope; don’t stop asking until your joy is full. God will answer you if you will not give up now.

Proverbs 16:1, 3 (KJV)
The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the Lord. Commit thy works unto the Lord and thy thoughts shall be established.

Bola and Jennet were friends from their childhood; they grew up and did almost everything together. They had similar dreams and visions since they grew up together, but it was observed that Jennet achieved much more success. When Bola asked Jannet for the secret of her great success, she found out that Jennet was much more committed and dependent on the Lord. Janet would always tell her plans to God first and do only what God leads her to do. For instance, she once turned down a high paying job because she was not led to take it.

It is good to have good plans and even confess them. But the establishment of such plans and confessions are only guaranteed when we commit them to the Lord. When we commit our plans to the Lord, He usually responds by giving us counsel.

When we seek and follow God’s counsel, we will labor less and achieve more because God himself would watch over our work. (See Jeremiah 1:12).

Go into today committing every single plan you have to God; ask His counsel and make up your mind to follow His leading. May grace for obedience be supplied to you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
