Matthew 28:19 (NET)Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit

After Larry accepted Christ, he realized that he no longer had the desire to be a sinner. But as time passed, he saw that his desire was not strong enough to keep him from his old sinful habits. Each time he fell, he felt uneasy inside because he knew he was not acting in accordance with his new nature. He knew he had received a new nature inside, but he wanted to know how to let this new nature dominate him and no more the old nature. After discussing his challenges with the person that led him to Christ, it became clear to him that he needed to submit himself to discipleship.

Discipleship is God’s educational system for training believers to walk in their new nature through the renewal of their minds by the word(see Rom 12:2). Spiritually mature believers are those who are no more carnal (dominated by the flesh) but are now dominated by the spirit. These are the believers whose lives are now dominated by the kingdom of God and who are striving for their reward in the kingdom.

One very important aspect of discipleship is the ministry of the word and prayer. You cannot disciple people without regularly interceding for them and teaching them the word of God; explaining the mysteries of the kingdom of God to them. Without proper discipleship, new believers will remain spiritual babies and may not abide in the Lord.

Go into today determined to submit yourself to proper discipleship if you are still controlled by your old nature of sin as a believer. If you are a discipler, ask the Lord to multiply your grace for this.

Our Spiritual Identity

1 Corinthians 10:1 (KJV) Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea

Have you ever wondered why in writing to Gentile (non-Jewish) believers, Apostle Paul referred to the Jewish ancestors who left Egypt as 'our fathers’? Why is Paul sounding as if all the Corinthian Christians were Jews whose fathers were in the wilderness?

This is because Paul understood that everyone in Christ now has the same ancestry as Christ. You see, when Christ came, he came as a Jewish man with Jewish ancestors. Because Jesus could have referred to the prophets of old as 'our fathers', the saints who are now members of Christ can also refer to them as 'our fathers’.

It is worthy of note that in just a few paragraphs before today’s verse, Paul said these words:

To the Jews, I became as a Jew… (1Cor 9:20). This means Paul no longer primarily saw himself as a Jew in the earthly sense. This is the Christian mindset: we are no longer defined according to our earthly identity, but our spiritual identity means we are descendants of Abraham because of our union with Christ who is the true seed of Abraham (see Gal 3:16). Because of this, we are inheritors of the blessing of Abraham (see Gal 3:13-14).

Romans 2:28-29 (NET) For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision something that is outward in the flesh, but someone is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart by the Spirit and not by the written code. This person’s praise is not from people but from God.

Go into today thanking Jesus (The king of the Jews) for making you His family.

James 1:14-15 (ESV) “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death".

Cain and Abel were brothers, one day they both brought an offering to God. They brought God what they considered good. Abel and his offering were accepted while Cain and his offering were rejected. The outcome of Cain's offering should have been a message; he needed to find out what God really wanted so his next offering would be accepted, but he desired to kill his brother instead. God however interrupted his desire by letting him know that he can still stop his evil intention before it has produced sin(see Genesis 4:6-7). Cain chose to execute his desire which produced sin and sin chased him out of God's presence.

You did not sin because you were tempted, you sinned because you yielded to the temptation. Sin cannot force itself on a believer, instead, it seeks his cooperation and this is achieved by taking advantage of his desires. If he has learned to control his desires, these desires will never produce sin but if he has not, his desires will produce sin.

Desires are products of the mind, thus, a renewed mind will produce renewed desires and an unrenewed mind will produce unrenewed desires which produce sin.

If you want to live a sin-free life, you must learn to control your desires. You will achieve this by renewing your mind (Romans 12:2) through the truth of God’s word (Eph 5:26).

Go into today knowing that the secret to a sin-free life is to continuously renew your mind by the word of God.

Prayer: Dear Lord, as I give myself to studying your word, open my eyes to see the truth that will help renew my heart.

Be Strengthened In The Lord

Ephesians 6:10 (NET) Finally, be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength of his power.

King David was a man of like passion: he believed in the Lord and hoped in His salvation just like you and me today. David went through a lot of ups and downs in his life, but in the end, the spirit of God bore witness that he fulfilled destiny and served God's purpose in his own generation(see Acts 13:36).

David had one secret that carried him through the battles of life and he always came out victorious. He understood how to draw strength from the Lord. There was a time he and his men came back home after a very long day, but they found that their homes had been plundered and their families were taken away as captives. It was at this point that we see an example of a man strengthening himself in the Lord.

1 Samuel 30:6 (ASV) says: “[a]nd David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David strengthened himself in Jehovah his God”.

At the end of that situation, David was victorious and recovered all that was lost(with extra) because he strengthened(encouraged) himself in the LORD his God [and did not wallow in discouragement like the others]. Drawing strength from the Lord was David's secret of victory in every battle. It is also our secret today.

Today's verse is talking about spiritual warfare and the first instruction we are given is that we should strengthen ourselves in the Lord. When there was a reason for David to be depressed, he decided to draw joy from the Lord and not allow the circumstances around him to make him depressed. This is also our battle strategy.

David drew His strength from the Lord because he understood that the Lord loves him and is on his side, and as long as the Lord is on his side, he would always come out victorious. When he was boasting against Goliath, it wasn't because he had a big sword, it was because he had a big God.

Go into today remembering that the joy of the Lord is your strength. Remember that the greatest God is on your side. Let this be your source of strength(see Philippians 4:4).

Prayer: Lord, help me to always draw my strength from you. Deliver me from the temptation to be heavy and depressed when circumstances do not go my way. Thank you for giving me victory always (2 Corinthians 2:14). Amen.

Knowing The Church Of Christ

1 Timothy 3:15 (LEB) “But if I am delayed, I am writing in order that you may know how one must conduct oneself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and mainstay ( ”basis"; or “support") of the truth".

Pastor, this problem began after I visited a church for prayers because of certain challenges I was facing. They took me to a river, gave me a sponge and a soap with which I took my bath there, and they prayed for me. I noticed that after that bath experience, I lost the ability to control my desires. After messing up with several ladies (most of which were from that church), I got one pregnant but when the lead Pastor became aware, he just said I should get ready for marriage because God has chosen her for me. Pastor, I don't like this lady neither do I like the fact that I am a slave to uncontrollable urges. Please help me sir!

The Church of the living God is the pillar and mainstay of the truth (1 Tim 3:25). It is where two or three who are being led by the Spirit of Christ are gathered together in His name; the congregation of those who are called out of the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light (1 Peter 2:9).

One of the hallmarks of the Church is her inability to house demons, this is because wherever God's kingdom is dominating, demons are cast out (Matthew 12:28).

Another Hallmark of the true Church is her inability to condone sin. The church does not pamper sin because 'he that commits sin is of the devil' and Jesus has been made manifest that the works of Satan might be destroyed (1 John 3:8). Anyone who continues in the works of Satan cannot be comfortable in the Church.

If you ever find yourself in a congregation where demons and sin are pampered and what is believed contradicts the truth of the Scriptures, you can be sure that you are not in the Church of the Living God. The right thing to do is to leave such a place.

Go into today knowing that any congregation where scriptural truths are silenced in order to tolerate sin and strange practices (that do not align with the precepts of the new testament church), that congregation is not part of the church of Christ.

Prayer: ask the Lord to pull down every synagogue of Satan disguised as a Church of Christ. Ask that the Lord will set their captives free.

1 Corinthians 9:24-25 (KJV) Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

Because Temitayo wanted to win the trophy, she was willing to do whatever it took. It became impossible for her to hide this from people around her. Everyone now knew she was an athlete because she was always doing something that showed she was preparing for the championship.

It doesn't take time for people who have to deal with really serious athletes to know that they are athletes. It is very difficult for them to hide this fact about them. It shows.

In the same way, when a believer is really serious about his kingdom assignment and winning his prize, he cannot hide his identity as a believer for long. Under normal circumstances, any believer who has successfully been able to hide his identity from his coworkers for several months may have been able to do so because he is not really striving for the prize of the mark of the high calling in God. Daniel worked in a most godless environment, but it was impossible for him to hide who he really was. Moses couldn’t either.

When your kingdom assignment takes over you and becomes the most important thing in your life, you will find that you are a witness for Christ everywhere you go. The Holy Spirit would begin to give you insight into people's lives just because He wants you to share the gospel with them.

Go into today remembering that you are first and foremost a witness for Christ in every place He has planted you. Ask the Lord to help you to this end. Ask for the wisdom to be a soul-winner.

When Temitayo started preparing for the championship in tennis, she knew she now had to become temperate in her eating, sleeping, watching movies, etc.

She was told by her instructor that she could no longer eat anything but had to only eat things that maximize energy output. Her life became greatly streamlined because of this championship.

Temitayo made the sacrifices she made because she wanted to win the tennis championship.

We are also in a championship, but this is for an infinitely more valuable incorruptible prize. The devil and his hordes of demons are our contenders that can't win the prize, but they want to hinder us. The only human beings that can overcome them are those who believe in the Lord Jesus (see 1 John 5:5).

We must maintain a champion's mindset of self-control. We must not let the flesh hinder us. We must always put the flesh under the will of our renewed minds. This is the only way to appropriate our victory over our contenders.

Go into today remembering that the prize you have to win is the reward for faithfully doing the work cut out for you by God. This reward, among other things, will translate to your place of glory and authority in God's eternal kingdom that would never end. Not everyone in the kingdom will receive a reward, some will suffer loss (see 1 Cor 3:15).

Prayer: Ask the Lord to help you run in such a way that you would receive your reward (1 Cor 9:24).

Sanctification: The Way To True Freedom

John 17:16-19 (KJV) “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth".

Bro, I'm not going, I'm tired of everyday deliverance, after all, we have seen no improvement. We've done all they said we should do; we've fasted and did vigils for several weeks, sown battle seed and the other kinds of seed. Remember that this is the eighth church we will be visiting for deliverance on this same issue, this deliverance thing is not working! I'm tired!

There seem to be many in the Church who do not know the purpose of deliverance, they see deliverance as an end in itself but it is not. The Israelites for instance were delivered from Egypt's captivity but a lot of them perished in the wilderness without entering the promised Land.

What deliverance does is to take the hindrances or blockages between us and the truth away. These hindrances could be demonic, human, or environmental. And once hindrances are taken away, the delivered must find the truth and continue to live by it. If this is not done, the deliverance will be short-lived and unable to produce freedom.

Jesus in John 8:32 said, “ you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free". So, what makes for freedom is knowledge of ( fellowship with) the truth. Obediah clarifies this when he said the following by the Spirit: “upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions" Obadiah 1:17 (KJV). In other words, deliverance makes holy living possible, and holy living yields freedom (possessing one's possessions).

Go into today knowing that to get true freedom, you must live holy. This will be possible when you allow the truth of God's word to sanctify you.

Pray: Thank you Jesus for access to your word, help me to live by the truth of your word. Amen!

Sanctification: The Path To Kingdom Greatness

John 17:17 (KJV), “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth".

The Chaplain said to the newly admitted students:

“Can you believe that Evangelist Gift was my vice president back in my university days? I gave the instructions and he followed, but he's now one of the most renowned evangelists in the world. You know, he never kept a girlfriend, didn't eat any sister's food, and never counseled with a sister, God said he shouldn't, he claimed. If he is not in class or studying his books, he is either praying or studying his Bible. We called him names and denied him certain privileges because we thought he was being unnecessarily pious. It is obvious today that he was right and I was wrong. I'm not comparing myself with him, God's mercy has found me, but I want you to know that your obedience to God's word and instructions will determine how far He can go with you."

Sanctification is not a gift, so it cannot be imparted, it is a work that must be done individually (Phil. 2:12). Corporate fellowship, prayers, and Bible studies are good if they culminate into personal disciplines that lead to personal dedication to the truth of the word of God.

When you begin to journey on the path of sanctification, God will begin to give you instructions that are peculiar to you. For instance, you may be instructed to stop watching movies, to give a certain percentage of your income to [the work of] God, to pick up certain kinds of jobs and never to accept others even when the pay is better, to pray for a number of hours daily, or to move to a certain location, etc.

No razor was to touch the head of Samson for he was a Nazarite unto God (Judges 13:5) and John the Baptist must drink neither wine nor strong drink but shall be filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:15). What instruction has God given you regarding your sanctification? Note that, just like Samson and John became great, you will also be great if you observe them. But if you choose to break your consecration either by neglecting these specific and unique instructions or by doing contrary to the written word of God, the promised greatness may never be actualized.

It is sanctification that consecrates and separates us unto God. It is proof that we are willing to follow God not just because of gains but because we love Him and desire to serve His purpose. This is what determines whether you will be great in the kingdom of God.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, please forgive my past disobedience and help me to spend the rest of my life in obedience to you. Amen

John 14:6 (KJV) “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me".

After about two months, Jude noticed that most of the persons who said the sinner’s prayer alongside him had returned to their old way of life. This got him so troubled that he asked his pastor, “what is happening sir? Why have these other persons fallen back into sin? I don't think they experienced what I experienced and is still experiencing”. What are you experiencing? His Pastor asked. “sir, the joy that came into my heart the very day I made Jesus my Lord is being renewed daily”, Jude responded.

“Your experience is because you have continued in obedience and service to Jesus. Those other persons fell back to their evil ways because unlike you, they did not continue”, his Pastor said.

When a man continues in the way (justification), he will meet with the truth and the truth will cause sanctification of such a one. Jesus said, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth" John 17:17 (KJV). In the same manner that we are being justified by putting our faith in Jesus, we will be sanctified by applying the truth of the word of God to our lives.

It is at the stage of sanctification that the truth of the word of God begins to reveal your unique faults to you. The people around you may even consider such faults not sinful, but you will just notice that you are not comfortable doing those things again. When you continue to live like this, you will begin to experience freedom, and the more you live your life based on the truth of the word of God, the more freedom you will experience.

In John 8:31-32, Jesus said to those who believed in him, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free".

When you continue in obedience to the truth of God's word, His word will lead you to life and this is what guarantees glorification.

Go into today determined to follow the truth of God's word until you take your last breath.

Prayer: thank you Jesus for bringing me into the way. Help me to continue until I have been made completely free by your truth. Amen!

1 Corinthians 9:21 (NET) To those free from the law I became like one free from the law (though I am not free from God’s law but under the law of Christ) to gain those free from the law.

When Ronke got to the university, she met some ‘brethren’ who taught that believers are not under the law therefore sin no longer exists for the believer.

The result of this doctrine was that sexual immorality was rampant in that fellowship. Some members of the fellowship were cultists, and some of the ladies were call-girls.

Ronke who was brought up in the way of righteousness now started despising her upbringing and believing that her parents were not knowledgeable in the ‘mysteries of the gospel’.

She continued to say this until she had her 4th abortion and ruptured her womb. During this period, she almost died and was hospitalized for weeks. None of her fellowship sisters or brothers showed up at the hospital. The only person that kept coming was her roommate (who attended a fellowship Ronke despised because she said they were still under the law in that fellowship). This was when the scales fell off Ronke’s eyes.

In an attempt to preach to believers that they are no more under the [old covenant] law, many have preached lawlessness and produced lukewarm half-baked believers who are potent tools in the hand of the enemy against the advancement of God's kingdom because they are a bad example and are a major hindrance to many seekers of truth from finding the truth of the gospel. This is the reason why Jesus would have preferred for such lukewarm 'believers' to be cold (unbelievers). At least they would not be a stumbling block (Rev 3:15-16).

Go into today remembering that even though you are not under the Old Testament law, you are not lawless but are under the law of Christ.

John 14:6 {KJV) "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me".

“If you have just said that prayer with me and believe it in your heart, you are now saved and has become a member of the kingdom of God. Congratulations!” said the preacher the day Jude became born again, there were at least a hundred persons who said this prayer. The joy of the Lord filled Jude's heart and he exclaimed “ I'm free! I'm free! I think there's something inside me generating joy!”

Jude and the other new converts were handed over to a Pastor who began his talk with them from today's passage. He said, “if you want to travel to a place you need to know the road to that place, then you have to travel on that road continually until you get to your destination. Every one of you has found the road and have started walking in it, you also have to continue on this road because if you stop or turn away from this path, you will not get to the destination”

If Jesus has become your Lord, you have found Jesus as the way, but continuing in Him is what guarantees eternal life. Are you saying a one-time confession of Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior does not guarantee eternal life? No, it does not. It however initiates the process by justifying you before God, thus making you a potential candidate for inheriting God’s kingdom. So, how is eternal life guaranteed? It is by continuing in the way that you have now found.

Jesus says “...if ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed" John 8:31 (KJV). He also said in Matthew 10:22 that, “he that endureth to the end shall be saved".

Go into today knowing that you have to patiently continue on this way if you must obtain the promised eternal life (Hebrews 10:36).

Prayer: make up your mind to continue with Jesus, then, ask him for grace to do so.

Ephesians 6:2-3 (NET) “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment accompanied by a promise, namely, “that it may go well with you and that you will live a long time on the earth.”

Because of what his discipler taught him, Joe understood that the promises of prosperity and long days were going to be activated in his life when he got rid of his bitterness and begin to honor his parents. After he overcame the bitterness in his heart through the help of the Holy Spirit and started honoring his parents by showing them respect and giving them gifts regularly, he started regularly confessing the promise of God that he would see good days on the earth. He had the faith to expect the manifestation of this promise in his life because he knew that by faith, he was now meeting the condition of this promise.

God's promises give us hope(an expectation), and faith gives substance to this hope(see Hebrews 11:1). For example, a person believes that he is healed through the stripes of Jesus because he has placed his faith in Jesus. That is hope. But he needs to give substance to this hope in order for him to receive his healing. One of the ways to give substance to your hope is by confessing what you hope for. Your confession becomes an act of faith. It now gives substance to what you hope for.

In mark 11:23, we can see that it is if a person believes and speaks according to what he believes that he will receive what he believes. The easiest way to give substance to your hope is by speaking it out. But you would not have the boldness to effectively do this if you are walking in disobedience.

Go into today remembering that faith is the action that accompanies the hope we receive from God’s word.

Prayer: ask the Lord to help you understand His promises and the conditions to receive them so that your faith will be boosted to receive all His promises for you.

Ephesians 6:2-3 (NET) “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment accompanied by a promise, namely, “that it may go well with you and that you will live a long time on the earth.”

After Joe became a believer in Christ Jesus, one of the things he learned was that he was to honor his parents. He was at odds with his parents because he believed they did not make any effort to give him a bright future. They did not send him to school. The little education he got, he got because of his strong desire and determination to break the circle of poverty. But even though he had been working really hard, he still struggled to live above poverty. He broke all contact with his parents because of the bitterness in his heart towards them.

After being a believer for some time, it became clear to him that he was operating under a demonic yoke of poverty and lack. As he discussed this with his discipler, the Holy Spirit revealed to his discipler that this yoke of poverty was only able to operate in his life because of the bitterness in his heart towards his parents [that led to him disobeying an express comamd of the Lord]. After Joe forgave his parents and started honoring them, the yoke was destroyed and his business started operating under an open heaven.

The first commandment with a promise in scripture is that children honor their parents.

We have been blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3), but the way to transmit these blessings to our earthly experiences is by the promises of God. 2 Peter 1:4 reveals that through the promises of God, we can partake of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

God's promises are based on His conditions, that's why they cannot be claimed by anyone but only by those who meet His conditions. As long as a person can meet the condition of any of God's promises, he can appropriate it by faith in the name of Jesus.

Go into today remembering that if a person truly abides in Christ [and lives as such], he would live in such a way that all the promises of God will find expression in his life. [For those abiding] in Christ Jesus, all the promises of God are yea and Amen (see 2 Corinthians 1:20).

Prayer: Lord, help me abide in you and activate all your promises for me by faith.

Living As The Family Of God

Ephesians 3:14-15 (KJV) For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.

Rose lost her parents at the age of seven, this made life really hard for her. She lived with a couple who were members of her parent's Church, but they turned her to their house help. They did not send her to school, beat her up for every and any mistake, used curse words on her, and threatened her to never complain to anyone. When a neighbor confronted them, their response was "we can't kill ourselves for another person's child".

This couple mistreated Rose because they did not understand that they belong in the same family. They did not know that they and Rose are God's children and because they are older, their Father (God) wanted them to take care of Rose (who is their younger sister) for Him.

When God wanted an earthly family, He sent Jesus Christ, and by believing in Him, we became His brethren. “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren" Romans 8:29 (KJV).

Now that you are a member of God's family, it is required of you to grow this family. You will do this by bringing new people into the family and/or caring for other members of this great family. Jesus says: “by this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another" John 13:35 (KJV).

If you have been treating God's children badly because they are not members of your biological family, denomination, or not within your circle, know that you have not been treating God well.

Go into today knowing that if they are children of God, they are your brothers and sisters and God expects you to treat them well for His sake.

Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me love and relate with your children like I would want to be loved. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

What does God want? Family

Ephesians 3:15 KJV “Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named"

Didn't God know that man will rebel? Why did He create man? Why won't He just give up on him after the rebellion? Why did He painstakingly create a way of reconciling man to Himself?

The need to be loved and to love seem to be the greatest need of mankind. A man will do the unthinkable to secure the affection of others, the case of a man loving a woman is a typical example; he just cannot rest until he has gotten the one he loves.

Our Bible text describes an important attribute of God; He loves to have a family. There are already members of His family in heaven(believers who have fallen asleep) and others on earth. This is the reason He made man; He wants an eternal family.

The devil however interfered with this wish of God before he had executed it, and like a man in love who will not give up on the one he loves, God did not give up on man. Because He desires a family, he instituted little pockets of the family; a man, his wife, and their children. But this failed because of the corruption of the fall. So He chose Israel and brought Jesus out of her who in turn founded another family; the Church.

The first family failed because the head-- man failed, but this new family will not fail because Christ Himself is the head, and He did not fail. It is now sure that God's initial desire will be actualized. The big question however is, are you a part of this family? If you are, have you recognized that everyone who belongs in this family is your sibling?

Go into today knowing that the Church is God's family and all of us who have been born into this family are siblings. We are to live as brothers and sisters bound by God's love and Jesus' blood. Read John 13:35.

Prayer: I receive the grace to see and relate with other children of God as my siblings who I love, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Ephesians 2:20 (KJV) And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.

I recently saw a post on social media where a young man was claiming that he had more revelations and Rhema than the apostles did because Jesus said we would do greater works. He went on to rebuke and criticize those he deemed as ‘myopic’ and ‘religious’ brethren who think they cannot have more revelation than what the apostles wrote in the Bible.

People who believe what he believes are those who say things like ‘Paul wrote that because he had not yet received sufficient revelation into the mystery of the gospel’. They are those who teach the ‘deep things of Satan’(see Rev 2:24) and call it the deeper things of the gospel. They forget that All scripture is God-breathed (see 2 Tim 3:16).

Every piece of writing that made it to the Bible (scriptures) made it as a result of God’s divine orchestration.

The Apostles and prophets referred to in today’s Bible text are the ones who wrote the Bible under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Under the inspiration of God, the Old Testament was written by The Prophets, and the New Testament was written by The Apostles. The Church is built on this foundation. Everything they wrote has Jesus as the chief cornerstone.

If tomorrow, we find Apostle Paul’s personal journal and jottings or we discover other letters Apostle Peter wrote to the churches, neither the discovered jottings nor letters would become part of scripture, and would not be treated as such. Many other letters were written by the apostles, but the ones the Holy Spirit allowed to make it into the Bible is now our scripture.

Go into today remembering that the Bible is God's gift to you. It was carefully orchestrated and arranged by the Holy Spirit over many centuries. Any revelation that is 'deeper' than what the scripture reveals is nothing by a false doctrine of men and demons.
Prayer: Ask the Lord to keep you from the spirit of error.

Matthew 6:10 (KJV) “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven".

“Does it matter what people do? Whatever God says must happen! He does what He wants and no man can change His plans, this is why he is called God; no man can change him". This was the response Judith got from her mom when she asked if God’s plan can change. “But, God said His plans toward us are good, why then are we going through all these troubles?” Judith asked her mom again.

Can God's plan change? Can He change His mind? Are His plans affected by the response (actions) of men? I believe these are real questions that confront us.

In heaven, God's will is always done and whatever goes against His will is chased out. Lucifer was chased out because of this. But the will of God is not always done on earth, it is because of this that Jesus says we should pray that God's will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

In 1 Samuel 23:9-14, David asked God two questions: “will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard?” and “will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand?" To both questions, God's response was yes. But non of the things that God said yes to happened, why? Because David left the city. Another example is Nineveh. God did not destroy the city as promised, why? Because the people repented (Jonah 3).

From today's text and what we learn from 1 Samuel 23:9-14 and Jonah 3, it is evident that what God has said can be changed, depending on the response of the people to such pronouncement.

Go into today knowing that for the will of God to be done on earth, in your family and life, you must play your part. You must pray and act accordingly.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I want to be the reason why your will is being done in my sphere, help me Lord so to live. Amen

Hebrews 11:4 (KJV) By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

Blessing, what are you going to do with the huge profit you made from that business? Peace, I am going to give it to God, I believe that's what the Holy Spirit is instructing me to do. What are you going to do with yours? Blessing asked Peace. I'm going to invest it in that business we discussed.

What Blessing and Peace did with their money, they did by faith; Blessing gave her huge profit to God and Peace invested hers in a business. Peace’s faith yielded an earthly reward while Blessing's will yield an eternal reward.

From today's text you will see that it is that which is offered, sacrificed, or given to God that yields eternal reward. Abel for instance, still speaks today although dead because of the gifts he offered to God (see Hebrews 11:4).

It is true that God wants to supply all your needs and you will receive these supplies by faith but you also must learn how to give back to God using the same faith. A careful study of Hebrews 11 reveals that It is what you do for or give to God that will be remembered eternally.

If you desire to store up treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:19), you must learn how to give, serve, and sacrifice by faith. The greatest value of faith is locked up in its ability to cause you to give.

Go into today knowing that living by faith entails knowing how to receive from and give to God by faith.

Prayer: Thank the Lord for all you've been able to receive by faith and ask Him for the grace to give by faith.

Controlling The Tongue

Ephesians 4:29-30 (NET) You must let no unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but only what is beneficial for the building up of the one in need, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Before Dara accepted the Lord Jesus, he didn't really feel any remorse or hindrance in his heart to committing sins. His conscience had been seared and he had lost all inhibition to sinning. But after receiving the Lord Jesus and being baptized in the Holy Spirit, he realized that his conscience became sensitive again. This sensitivity helped him to overcome many of the temptations that sought to take him back to his former way of life. He had a new nature within that repelled that way of life.

One thing that he found most difficult to control though was his tongue. He saw that it was easy for unwholesome words to still come out of his mouth. It didn't take long for him to utter a certain four-letter curse word and others like it. He still flared up and said hurtful things when he was offended. Because his conscience was now alive by the indwelling Holy Spirit, he knew the Holy Spirit was grieved when unwholesome words came out of his mouth.

From the book of James, we can see that the most difficult part of the body to control is the tongue, and if a person can control his tongue, he is a perfect man (see James 3:2). A man may have gained mastery to the point that he no longer walks in any other works of the flesh that had bedeviled him all his life, but he may find that controlling his tongue is a little more difficult.

Many believers don't commit any known or bogus sins, but their words are not seasoned with salt and can pierce and really hurt (beyond proportion) when they are offended. Sharp words that damage can easily come out of their mouths when they're offended.

We see that the Lord Jesus who is our perfect example did not open his mouth [to curse or utter harsh words] when he was oppressed and afflicted (see Isaiah 53:7). This is a cue for us. When you are really hurt and offended, it is better to keep quiet at that point because if you don't, you may not be able to control your tongue and you may say things that you shouldn't say. Deal first with the anger and hurt in your heart in the place of prayer before speaking about a matter that has hurt you.

Go into today determined to be deliberate in the use of your tongue. Let thanksgiving, the praises of God, and His words fill your tongue from when you wake up in the morning. Confess the word of God regularly with your tongue and let it wash out every vestige of bitterness and corruption (see Ephesians 5:26).

Prayer: Lord, help me control my tongue and use it only for your praise and glory. Amen.

Matthew 15:36 (KJV)And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

“How on earth do you expect me to give out of the little I earn? My needs are almost ten times what I earn; I have always borrowed to meet up. Pastor, that your message on giving is for those who have plenty!”

Luke 6:38 (KJV)
“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”

There are certain laws that govern existence; one of such is the law of sowing and reaping, planting and harvesting –giving and receiving.

Now, there are many things that you can give, things such as your time, money, materials, and the fruits of your lips which are praises or thanksgiving to God. When Jesus was confronted with the need to feed the multitude and all he had was the little bread and fish, he offered it to God first by giving thanks before giving it to the disciples. The result was multiplication.

Anything offered to God in thanksgiving would multiply. Give whatever you are giving out of a thankful heart and God will multiply it.

Go into today knowing that you will receive when you give, harvest when you plant, and reap when you sow. However, it will be multiplied when you give, sow or plant with a thankful heart.

1 Thessalonians 4:3 (NET) For this is God’s will: that you become holy, that you keep away from sexual immorality

I remember having a conversation with a backslidden brother who had an argument with me concerning the definition of fornication. He was trying to prove to me that if two people have agreed to marry each other, and they become intimate, they are not committing fornication, that marriage was about consent. I tried to show him from scripture that even though marriage was about consent, a lady is given in marriage by the constituted [spiritual] authority over her. She does not give herself in marriage but her father or someone occupying that position in her life is the one who gives her in marriage.

My conversation with this brother (who the Lord is now restoring) opened my eyes to an obvious phenomenon I had not properly considered: sexual immorality is a major source of stumbling for many believers, but little is said about it in many church assemblies. Many have gotten into trouble in this area because of carelessness in little things. I remember having to instruct one of my mentees to never be alone and have a sister visit.

God's will for us believers is that we become holy. There is nothing that hinders this like sexual immorality. Fleeing sexual immorality for the believer is not a suggestion, it is an instruction. If we must continue to live and excel spiritually, we must put to death the works of the flesh (see Romans 8:13), and the first in that list is sexual immorality (see Galatians 5:19).

We live in a world that is increasingly sensual. Temptations are everywhere, but remember that where Sin abounds, grace abounds much more. Grace empowers us to resist sin. It teaches us how to deny worldly lusts (Titus 2:11-12). (It would teach an unmarried young man not to tell a lady he does not intend to marry that 'I love you'.)

Go into today asking the Lord for grace to stand in this area. This grace is received by faith. You have to believe that you can stand and stay pure.

Prayer: I Expel and resist every [latent] influence of the spirits of immorality. I walk in Holiness and inherit God's promises. Amen (2 Corinthians 7:1).

Taking the Lord's Name in Vain

Exodus 20:7 (KJV) Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Raymond! Raymond! You need to ask God's forgiveness! Exclaimed Francis. “What have I done wrong?” Raymond responded. Have you forgotten the ten commandments? You just took the name of the Lord in vain, Francis answered. "But you know I'll never do that on purpose, it was a reflex action. I shouted Jesus because that car almost knocked me down. But I'll go and ask God's forgiveness" Raymond said.

What is taking the name of the Lord in vain? For Raymond and Francis, the name of the Lord is so sacred that it shouldn't be called even in danger, the Lord's name is to be mentioned only in prayers or in a sacred gathering, such as the Church.

What does the word ’take' mean? According to the English dictionary, it means to get in one's hand, possession, or control. Thus taking the name of the Lord in vain is possessing the name of the Lord in vain. Only those who are children of God can possess his name. Consequently, they are the ones who can bear or take his name in vain.

2 Timothy 2:19 (KJV) says “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity".

So, taking the name of the Lord in vain is claiming to be in Christ or being a Christian and at the same time living in sin. According to today's passage, this person will not be guiltless.

Go into today knowing that to be a child of God is to bear God's name and that hallowing this name is by departing from iniquity. If you continue in sin after you have known the Lord, you are taking the name of the Lord in vain.

Prayer: I am a child of God; a bearer of his name. Hallowed is the name of the Lord upon me. I live to bring God glory in Jesus’ name.

Romans 12:2 (NET)Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God - what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.

We have previously examined the attributes of the will of God as perceived by the renewed mind. We saw that when deciding who to marry, the person must be good (meaning he or she must be born of God), the person should be acceptable to you (meaning he or she should be well-pleasing to you and to your brethren to whom you are accountable).

Today we shall begin examining the third component of the will of God as perceived by the renewed mind:

PERFECT
Most times when you see the word ‘perfect’ in the New Testament, it is referring to spiritual maturity. It is a term that has to do with completeness; attaining the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ (Eph 4:13).

When a person is perfect for you, it means the person complements you and makes you complete; one who will help you fulfill your divine purpose and destiny. This means you are to have a vision and a mission in life in order for you to rightly discern who will help you in fulfilling it.

Notice in Acts 2:17 that young men see visions. As a young man, you should know the direction your life is going. You should have a vision for your life, then marry someone whom together you can both fulfill destiny. Having a clear vision for your life will help you chose rightly.

Go into today remembering that life for the believer is about fulfilling God’s kingdom purpose. Marriage is meant to help you do this.

If you are not yet married, ask the Lord to help you marry the person that will help you serve Him better. If you are married, ask the Lord to bless your marriage and make you more fruitful according to His divine purpose.

Psalms 1:1-2 (NET) How blessed is the one who does not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand in the pathway with sinners, or sit in the assembly of scoffers! Instead he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands; he meditates on his commands day and night.

“It is not that big a deal” said Lola for the umpteenth time that evening, but Eno would have none of it. Lola and Eno are both members of the choir group in their fellowship on campus. Earlier in that evening, Eno had gone to Lola’s room to check on her so they could both walk to rehearsals as it was their weekly day of rehearsal. However, she had met Lola deeply engrossed in the show Cupid’s Arrow Season three. She then commented that how come Lola skipped all of Season two and was now in season three observing that last week, she had met Lola last on Season One of the show. To which Lola stated that she had completed both Season One and Two since then.

Eno tried to point out to Lola that her obsession with these movies (Cupid’s Arrow, Love Triangle, Heart On Fire, etcetera) was unhealthy for her spiritual development especially noting that these were not wholesome entertainment as they glorify the emotions and portray no godly standard with regards to sex and marriage. But Lola was adamant that these were just her means of unwinding and that it wasn’t that much of a big deal. But the Bible says otherwise.

It is instructive that when Jesus summarized the law He quoted Deuteronomy 6 verse 5 which speaks about loving the Lord with all your heart and soul and mind and might (Mark 12:30). Our text today also began by outlining what a blessed man does not do, and the first thing it mentions about what he does is about what he finds pleasure in (God’s words). Apostle Paul writing to the Colossian church also admonished them to set their affections on the things of God. Clearly, what, and even whom, you delight in matters.

In fact, Apostle James warns that we are tempted along the lines of our strong (and inordinate) desires. This is because love is a precursor to service. Jesus speaking about mammon started by stating that you cannot serve two masters at the same time, you will rather love one and hate the other (Matt 6:24). Remember, affection produces actions, therefore guard your heart with all diligence for out of it flows the issues of life.

Go into today determined to set your affections on the things of God knowing that it matters who and what you love.

Romans 12:2 (NET) Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God - what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.

Uche was interested in marrying Agnes. He really loved her. But it was clear that his parents did not approve. His mother was not particularly excited about her. He also observed that his brethren in the church didn’t seem happy with their relationship.

Because he was determined to marry Agnes, he didn’t want to find out the reason why all the people around him who cared for him did not find Agnes acceptable. He decided to go ahead with the wedding plans, but his mother insisted that she was not going to attend the wedding. Meanwhile, she was making inquiries about Agnes.

Unknown to Uche, his beloved had been married before and even has a son, but she didn’t tell him. She was not a believer, but only pretending to be one. She knew that if she could get Uche to marry her, she would trap him and it would be hard for someone like him to divorce.

Even though Agnes was well-pleasing to Uche, she was not well-pleasing to his brethren and to his God-fearing parents. It is important that we consider our brethren to whom we are accountable when deciding who to marry. Because you are the one involved, and because of emotions, you may not be objective enough in your judgments, but when all the people around you who fear the Lord seem to have issues with a particular decision you want to make, wisdom demands that you put a break to it till the issues are sorted out.

Go into today remembering to seek to walk in the will of God at all times. Remember that the will of God is not only good and perfect, it would be acceptable to you and everyone around you whose mind has been renewed by the word of God.

Romans 12:2 (NET) Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God – what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.

We saw previously that there are three attributes of the will of God as perceived by the renewed mind. It will be good, it will be acceptable or well-pleasing, and it will be perfect.

We have seen that when it comes to who to marry, only those who are born of God are good.
Today we shall begin to examine the second attribute of the will of God:

ACCEPTABLE OR WELL-PLEASING

Whoever you marry must be well-pleasing to you. This means you should be attracted to that person. There should be ‘butterflies in your stomach’ when you think about that person. This is very important. This is the person you are going to spend the rest of your life with. But be careful you are controlled by your renewed mind.

If you are already married and you notice that that passionate love and attraction has run out, ask the Lord to restore it in your marriage. His first miracle was a sign. He restored the wine at a wedding when the wine ran out. Wine symbolizes joy and excitement. If the wine in your marriage has run out, please ask the Lord to come and restore it, and He will.

Proverbs 5:18 says: Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
This is God’s will concerning marriage; that a husband and wife be always excited about each other.
Many have asked me: What if the will of God is someone I don't like?
I say God is not wicked. God will give you somebody that is acceptable to you. And even if that is not the case at the beginning, it will be the case before you eventually marry that person.

Go in today remembering that Christ rejoices over His church. He rejoices over you with singing (Zephaniah 3:17). And He is jealous over you.

2 Corinthians 6:14 (NET)
Do not become partners with those who do not believe, for what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship does light have with darkness?

The person you marry as a believer should believe in God the way you believe in God.
There are two categories of doctrinal differences.

One is the distortion of form, and the other is the corruption of substance. Distortion of form can be tolerated, but the corruption of substance should not be tolerated when entering marriage.

"Distortion of Form" includes doctrinal differences that do not affect the core of our faith.

They could involve differences in the way water baptism or Holy Communion is administered, differences in convictions about the manner of dressing, and certain other superficial issues. A believer could marry another believer who has little doctrinal differences in things that do not affect the substance of our faith. But he is marrying an unbeliever if he marries a person claiming to be a Christian, but does not believe certain core truths of the faith. They include Salvation by faith in Christ  (Acts 4:12, Eph 2:8); Believing that Jesus is the only way to the Father (John 14:6), Believing in the Lord Jesus; that He is God come in flesh (John 1:14), Believing in the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the power of God(Luke 3:16), Believing that believers are empowered by God to live righteous and holy lives in this world(1 Pet 1:6, 2 Pet 3:11, Eph 4:1, Rom 12:1), Believing in sexual purity before and during marriage(Eph 5:3, 1 Thess 4:3), Believing in the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor 4:5,1 Thess 3:13, 2 Thess 2:1-2).

Anyone who claims to be a Christian but does not believe these mentioned truths have the substance of his faith corrupted.

Go into today knowing that Christian marriage is a theatre for Jesus to showcase and exemplify His relationship with the church. It is a very serious matter in the kingdom of God.

Romans 12:2 (NET) Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God—what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.

A renewed mind is the only mind that can discern the will of God. As a believer, your mind is renewed when you allow the word of God change the way you think.

These are the three components of the will of God as perceived by the renewed mind:
It is GOOD, it is WELL-PLEASING and it is PERFECT

GOOD:
Only God and who/what is born of God is good.
A ruler came to Jesus and said 'good teacher' (see Luke 18-19)
Jesus asked him ‘why do you call me good?’ He then said 'no one is good except God alone'. Jesus implicitly asked the young ruler that ‘are you saying that I’m God?’ Because that’s who Jesus was.

The important lesson Jesus was teaching is that you cannot find ‘Good’ outside God. The young ruler came to Jesus and called Him 'good teacher', but he did not understand what he was talking about. Jesus was indeed good, but not because of the man’s definition. He was good because He was born of God, and is God.

You cannot define Good outside God.
What does this mean when it comes to who to marry?
A person is only good when he or she is born of God. The first attribute of the will of God is that it must be good.
God warns us not to be unequally yoked together with unbelievers (see 2 Cor 6:14)
As a believer, this is the most important consideration in determining the will of God concerning who to marry.

Go into today remembering that being a believer does not just mean the person says he or she is a Christian. The person must believe in God the way you believe in God.

Prayer: Lord, help me walk in your will in all things. Amen.
