2 Corinthians 5:9-10 (NET)So then whether we are alive or away, we make it our ambition to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be paid back according to what he has done while in the body, whether good or evil.

When Chude was in primary school, he was often asked what his life's ambition was. Chude always wanted to be a pilot, and unlike most of his classmates, he held onto that ambition. Because studying to be a pilot was really expensive in his country, his parents could not afford to send him to aviation school, so he attended the government subsidized school everyone attended and studied to be an engineer. But as soon as he graduated from engineering school, an opportunity presented itself, he seized it forcefully and went to aviation school. He ultimately fulfilled his life's ambition of becoming a pilot.

But after becoming a pilot and flying planes for hours and hours, one day he asked himself if it was all worth it. Being a pilot had lost its novelty, and his lifelong ambition had now proven to be nothing but vanity(Ecclesiastes 1:2). But after Chude accepted the Lord Jesus Christ, he found an eternal ambition that now propelled his life and delivered him from the crisis of earthly vanity. His ambition was now to please the Lord at all costs. He now looked forward to the day he would hear the Lord say "well done, good and faithful servant". He understood that there was an eternal kingdom prepared for him to inherit, and he did not want to lose his place in that kingdom. Even though he remained a pilot, his work as a pilot now had new meaning. He was now a representative of Christ.

From today's Bible Reading, we see that we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ. It didn't say “we may all appear” or “we can all appear”. Appearing before the judgment seat of Christ is an inevitable destination for us all. From now, we can decide to live our lives in such a way that when we appear before the Lord, we would not be ashamed. Know that many would be cast away because they lived to please themselves rather than to please the Lord (see 1 Corinthians 9:27).

Go into today remembering that the only way to live a life that would pass the Lord's test on that day is when pleasing the Lord [at all costs] becomes your life's ambition.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to be filled with the knowledge of your will, and to please you in all regards. Amen.
