1 Corinthians 9:25 (NET) Each competitor must exercise self-control in everything. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one.

Joe’s shoe had given way during the Camp Meeting. He was quite chagrined because this was the third footwear that had disappointed him so in the space of 12 months. This time around, he decided to go shoe-shopping with his friend Mayowa.

When they got to the shoe section of the market, every shoe seller was jostling for their patronage. Joe and Mayowa settled for the shop of the man with the widest smile. When they got inside, they saw shoes of all sizes and colors. Two particular pairs caught the eyes of Joe and the shop owner quickly took them off the rack for more close inspection by his customers. One was brown, made of leather with an adjustable strap. The other was black, shiny, and in good condition.

Upon inquiry, the shop owner stated the prizes of the shoes and Mayowa noted with surprise, that the brown shoes cost almost three times the cost of the black shoes. Joe was minded to go for the cheaper option when Mayowa leaned over holding the brown shoes and whispered into his ears: “But this one will last longer”.

You see, in life, more often than not, the more durable a thing is, the more valuable it is considered. This is why a man living with an eternal perspective is more likely to live more wisely as his sense of value will be impacted by his outlook. It is no wonder Jesus asked, “what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul” (See Mark 8:36-37), because Jesus understood that a man’s soul is more valuable than the riches the world has to offer, indeed, man will practically outlast this world.

This understanding will inspire the wisdom of self-control in your personal dealings. If you know this at a heart level, you will exercise restraint and not be quick to jump at every supposed gain this world advertises or promotes. You will relegate anxiety to the background and give yourself to the disciplines that the call of God demands.

There is an imperishable “gold medal” for those who run this race well; there is a crown for those who will be faithful to Jesus till the end. Go into today geared up to run this race exercising self-control over your desires and body until you win the crown because this one will last…forever.

Prayer: Lord, help me never forget that my soul is far more precious than anything this present world is offering (Mark 8:36-37). Help me to be faithful to the end.
