The Sin of Comparing and Complaining

Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV) It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Larry was so tired of everything he was going through that he was willing to just quit serving the Lord. His discouragement in life was primarily because he was comparing himself with certain people who seemed to be doing much better than him materially. He wasn't really doing badly, but he could not appreciate what the Lord was doing for him because he was too busy comparing himself with certain people.

As Larry grew spiritually, he realized that he had been walking in foolishness for a long time because he was comparing himself with other people(see 2 Corinthians 10:12), and had demonstrated unthankfulness to the Lord for so many years, yet the Lord was still faithful in keeping him. He saw how the dealings of the Lord were different in his own life and he now appreciated the wisdom of the Lord in determining his seasons. He also saw how the Lord was patiently working in him to produce perfection, and he now understood the futility of comparing himself with other people.

Many times a believer begins to compare himself with other people and grumble in his heart, it sends such a negative signal against the Lord in the realm of the spirit that what he deserves, as a result, is destruction. Many of the people of Israel were consumed in the wilderness because of the basic sin of comparing and complaining(see 1 Corinthians 10:10), and scripture reveals that these things happened to them for our examples (see 1 Corinthians 10:6).

The next time the flesh wants to push you to compare and complain, remember that you're an eternal being and the way to measure your progress is by eternal standards and not merely earthly ones. What should get you bothered is if you're not growing in the knowledge of the Lord and becoming more like Him daily.

Remember also that complaining as a believer is a fruit of unbelief. They that live by faith know that God is in control. Instead of complaining, pray about every situation until the pressure in your heart is relieved. If after you've prayed the pressure comes back, pray some more(Phillipians 4:6).

Go into today knowing that it is because of the mercy of the Lord that we have not been consumed in spite of our complaining. Many of God's people were consumed in the wilderness because they were guilty of complaining about things that people would normally complain about, but they were to know better. If you find that you too are guilty of comparing and complaining, repent now.
