2 Peter 3:11 (KJV)
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness

He arrived Scotland via Aberdeen airport ready to begin his studies. Coming from Africa, everything looked and felt strange to him and when he got on a taxi, he knew then that he had an issue. He found it difficult to communicate with the locals because he was taught English language by a native of his own country. There was a huge difference in the way they sounded. Later he would always be identified as the foreigner because of what they called his "funny accent".

Even more than looks, accent is one sure way to identify a foreigner. Two people might have similar features, but their accents will give them away.

The conversation from today's scriptural verse talks about the pilgrim's entire lifestyle, including his speech, action, dressing, outings, mannerisms, etc.

The believer is on a pilgrimage here on earth. He comes from a place with a different language and way of speaking. The world speaks with an untamed tongue filled with filthy things, flatteries, boastings, jesting, heated arguments, cursing, putting down, gossips, slanders, lies, etc., eventually leading to hell (See Romans 3:10-14 & James 3:6). This is not so for the believer as he now has a tamed tongue, achieved not by the workings of man, but by the regenerative work of the Holy Spirit (See James 3:8-10, Isaiah 6:7 & Exodus 4:12).

Today, as pilgrims, we are reminded that we are to use our mouths as instruments of righteousness and not for sin. Our response to the world must always reference our heavenly identity. Also, this means we must actively and politely counter or leave certain unwholesome conversations because sitting silently will imply involvement. They may ridicule you now as being weird or having a different tongue, but it sure won't be funny on the Day of Judgment.

Prayer: Lord, please help me order my words according to your will.
