 Audio Version:
1 Timothy 6:12 [KJV]
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

There is a variety in the quality of life possessed by living things. Though a tree is classified as living, it possesses a different life quality when compared to an ant. For instance, an ant can move from one place to another; a tree cannot. Likewise, the ant possesses a lower quality of life when compared to a dog. However, the highest life under the sun is that of humankind.

Eternal life is the highest life that there is. No man ever attained it until Jesus Christ came to exemplify it. Through His death and resurrection, a man is empowered to live eternal life when he believes in Christ. John 3:16 says '... whosoever believes in Him shall not perish not have eternal life.'

We possess eternal life through salvation which is also 'being born again' (see John 3:3). But just like the child possesses the human life and must grow to practice or actually live that life, we must practice the eternal life that we possess. A man who behaves less than is expected of a human can even be likened to an animal. So also, when a believer falls short of the righteous standards of God, he is living the lower life. Jesus urged us to deny ourselves and daily carry our crosses (see Matthew 16:24). This is the good fight of faith. It is a fight we win when we maintain faith in the ability of Christ in us and not in ourselves. This is also called 'walking in the Spirit'. (Gal 5:16).

Go into today, trusting in God as you lay hold on eternal life. Consciously choose righteousness and demonstrate your dominion over sin.
