1 John 4:9
By this the love of God is revealed in us: that God has sent his one and only Son into the world so that we may live through him. [NET]

For twelve years Gabriel had lived under constant fear of death even though he was a Christian. He believed in Christ Jesus but he also believed he received protection from God because of his righteousness. He feared that one day he would sin and loose God's protection, and since this happened a lot, he lived under a constant fear of the unknown.

Gabriel suffered from the fear of death, something that the Lord particularly came to save us from (see Heb 2:15), because he based his relationship with God on works and not on faith in the finished work of Christ Jesus.

Unfortunately, many Christians are like Gabriel; they live in constant fear of the unknown because they have not fully rested in the finished work of Christ for them on the cross. Our text today shows that God loves us so much that He gave us His only son so that we may not die but live through Him. Any kind of separation from God is death, and that is exactly what a mindset of 'works for salvation' produces. If your works could save you in the first place, Christ would not have needed to die for you.

Go into today remembering that the righteousness that pleases God is the one that is born out of faith in Christ Jesus. Christ receives you, forgives you, cleanses you, and continues to cleanse and teach you till you become just like Him. Be rested in God’s perfect love for you and cast away all fear from your heart.

Prayer: Father, I thank you for your grace that has made me your own. I pray you help me always walk in the consciousness of your eternal love for me, in Jesus name I pray. Amen.
