Romans 8:8

Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. [NET]

When I read a verse like this, something comes to my mind: Do I really know what it means to be in the flesh? Am I not still living in a body of flesh, why then does it say those who are in the flesh cannot please God?

Verse 5 of the same chapter gives us more insight. It says “For those who live according to the flesh have their outlook shaped by the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their outlook shaped by the things of the Spirit”

One of the most important things about being a Christian is letting God change the way you see the world, the way you see yourself and the way you see Him (see Rom 12:2).

Psalm 1 explains this too; It says ‘blessed is the man that stands not in the counsel of the wicked…’. Anyone who still lives his life according to the standards and expectations of this world is living his life according to the counsel of this wicked word, and that is the default state of everyone who is born into this world. The solution is to delight in God’s word and meditate on it (see Psa 1:2). The word of God has the ability to change our outlook to life from that of the word to that of God’s kingdom.

Any Christian that still has his outlook shaped by the things of this world cannot be spiritual but he is bound to be worldly and still live according to the flesh. Romans 8:8 shows that such a Christian cannot please God.

Go into today determined to have your outlook to life shaped by God’s eternal kingdom.

Prayer: Lord please help me to Let your word be the standard for my Life. Amen.
